Paper & Carton Coding & Marking

Substrates: Folding Cartons · Corrugated Boxes · Coated and Uncoated Paper · Labels and Paper Bags

Rechnology: Piezoelectric Inkjet (PIJ) (for Large-Character Coding on Corrugated Boxes) · Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) (for High-Resolution Coding on Pharmaceutical Cartons) · Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) (for High-Speed Carton Lines) · CO₂ Laser (Consumables-Free)
Recommended LT Model: P5 Pro / P7 Pro (PIJ) · LT800 (CIJ) · LT60C CO₂ Laser

The One Constraint: Corrugated board is rough — ink absorption is inconsistent and barcode quality degrades. Match the technology to coated vs uncoated vs recycled stock.

Cartons and corrugated boxes are used across food, pharmaceutical, logistics, and retail. Coding supports batch tracking, supply-chain identification, and regulatory compliance — with pharmaceutical serialization requiring an integrated print-inspect-verify closed loop, not printing alone. Two physical realities govern selection: corrugated surface roughness causes inconsistent ink absorption, and coated, uncoated, and recycled papers behave very differently.

Folding CartonPharmaceutical & foodTIJ preferred for high-resolution barcode and 2D output
Corrugated BoardRough surfaceUneven ink absorption reduces barcode quality; PIJ large-character coding is a suitable solution
Coated PaperCoated vs Uncoated vs RecycledSignificantly different ink absorption and drying; technology must match the stock

Coding Challenges

  • Corrugated board has a rough, fluted surface → ink absorbs unevenly → barcode edges blur and scan quality drops. High-resolution PIJ / large-character inkjet holds barcode quality on porous board.

  • Coated, uncoated, and recycled papers absorb and dry ink differently → one setting won't hold across stocks → codes over- or under-penetrate and read inconsistently. Match the technology and ink to the stock.

  • Pharmaceutical serialization needs print + vision verification + database in a closed loop → printing alone leaves a serialization gap → unverified codes create compliance exposure. Integrate print, inspection, and database.

  • Retail/logistics scanning depends on barcode readability across substrate variation → a marginal code on recycled board → read failures and rework. Maintain readability with a technology matched to the board.

Technology Selection
TechnologyFitWhy / Why Not
Piezoelectric Inkjet (PIJ)★ Recommended(Corrugated Boxes)Prints large barcodes/logos on porous corrugated board, replacing pre-printed labels
Thermal Inkjet (TIJ)★ Recommended(Pharmaceutical Cartons)High-resolution barcode/2D output for pharmaceutical folding cartons
Continuous Inkjet (CIJ)○ Alternative(High-Speed Carton Lines)Fast date/lot on high-speed carton and corrugated box lines
CO₂ Laser○ Alternative(Consumables-Free)Consumable-free permanent marking on corrugated and paper-based packaging
Fiber Laser- Not recommendedFiber is a metal-marking wavelength; on paper it chars/burns with no benefit

Large barcodes/logos on corrugated → PIJ, printed straight on the board to replace pre-printed labels. Pharmaceutical folding cartons → TIJ, high barcode/2D resolution. Small variable data on high-speed carton lines → CIJ. Consumable-free permanence → CO₂ laser. Do not use fiber laser on paper — wrong wavelength, it chars. For pharma serialization, remember: print + verify + database, not print alone.

· 260 m/min

Why this one:

P5 Pro prints 600 DPI barcodes on porous corrugated at 260 m/min through a RICOH MH5420 head — removing the pre-printed label step entirely.

FAQ

1
Why is TIJ preferred for pharmaceutical cartons?
TIJ delivers high print resolution and strong barcode/2D quality, which pharmaceutical folding cartons require.
2
What does pharmaceutical carton serialization actually require?
It requires integrated print, inspection (vision verification), and database linkage in a closed loop — not printing alone.
3
Why do corrugated boxes challenge barcode quality?
Surface roughness causes inconsistent ink absorption, which can degrade barcode quality; technology selection should account for substrate variation.
4
Can inkjet replace pre-printed shipping labels?
Yes — large-character PIJ prints barcodes and logos directly on corrugated, removing the pre-printed label step.
