The One Constraint: Glass is smooth and non-absorbent — standard ink cannot key in and beads off. Use a fast-drying specialized ink, or laser (CO₂ etches glass; fiber does not).

Glass containers are used across beer, wine, beverage, perfume, pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetics. Because glass is smooth and non-absorbent, coding relies on fast-drying inks or laser to achieve reliable adhesion and permanence. Drivers are date/batch compliance, beverage traceability, and serialization on pharmaceutical glass. Three physical realities govern selection: condensation on cold-fill and chilled bottles defeats ink; dark amber and green glass cut contrast; and returnable bottles sometimes need washable ink.

Coding Challenges

  • Glass is non-absorbent, smooth, and non-porous → standard ink cannot key into the surface → the code beads, smears, or wipes off. Fast-drying specialized ink or laser is required.


  • A cold-fill/chilled bottle → a condensation film forms on the surface → ink fails to adhere and reads fail. Use a penetrating CIJ ink, or CO₂ laser, which surface moisture does not affect.


  • Amber/green dark glass → too little tonal contrast between ink and substrate → codes become hard to read or scan. Use a higher-contrast ink, or a laser etch that frosts the surface.

  • Returnable/refillable bottles → a permanent mark conflicts with re-use → old codes cannot be removed for refilling. Use washable/removable ink where returnability is required.

Split by purpose. For permanence and abrasion resistance, use CO₂ laser — it etches the mark into the glass, with no ink to shed. Pharmaceutical vials and premium cosmetic glass take UV laser for fine, high-contrast codes. High-speed beer/wine/beverage lines needing variable data use CIJ with a fast-drying specialized ink. Do not use fiber laser on glass — the wavelength is poorly absorbed; PIJ/TTO do not suit smooth rigid glass either.
