Fiber laser marking is a suitable technology for defect-free equipment marking. Fiber laser marked products can be properly identified and tracked throughout their lifecycle, improving patient safety, simplifying product recalls and improving market research. Laser marking is suitable for identification marks on medical devices such as orthopaedic implants, medical supplies and other medical devices, as the marks are resistant to corrosion and undergo intense sterilization processes, including centrifugation and Autoclave process.
Fiber laser marking is an alternative to etching or engraving processes, both of which alter the microstructure of the material and can result in changes in strength and hardness. Because fiber laser marking is a non-contact method of engraving and works very quickly, parts are not subject to the stress and possible damage that other marking schemes can create. 'Grows' a dense cohesive oxide coating on the surface; no condensation is required. Government guidelines for the Unique Device Identification (UDI) of all medical devices, implants and instruments define a permanent, clear and correct marking. While markers improve patient safety by reducing medical errors, provide access to relevant data and facilitate device traceability, it is also used to combat impersonation and deceit. Impersonation is a multi-billion dollar market. Fiber optic provides UDI, identifying manufacturer, product age and serial number, which helps combat fake suppliers. Counterfeit equipment and medicines are often sold at low prices but of dubious quality. This would put patients at risk and would impact the end of the original manufacturer's brand.
