Weatherproof IPPC Marks for Rough, Export-Bound Timber

Sawn Timber · Plywood · Pallets · WPC · Packaging Crates

Wood & Lumber Coding & Marking

Substrates: Pallets · Plywood / Boards / Timber · Export Wood Packaging (IPPC/EPAL) · Furniture Components

Rechnology: Label Print & Apply (LPA)(Pallet GS1 / SSCC Labeling)· Continuous Inkjet (CIJ)(Direct Marking on Panels / Wood Materials)· CO₂ Laser(Permanent Panel Marking)· Hot Branding(Durable Outdoor Marking)
Recommended LT Model: LT800 (CIJ) · P7 Pro (PIJ) · LT60C CO₂ Laser

The One Constraint: Wood is heterogeneous — grain, knots, moisture, and rough saw texture make ink absorption inconsistent. Choose a technology that tolerates surface variation.

Wood and lumber marking supports grade identification, origin traceability, logistics management, and export compliance. In logistics and warehouse environments, automated label print & apply is the standard for pallet identification, while CIJ is standard for direct marking on plywood, boards, and timber. Two physical realities govern selection: wood surface heterogeneity (grain, knots, moisture, rough saw texture) causes inconsistent ink absorption, and export marks (IPPC/EPAL) are permanent identification requirements, not variable date codes.

Coding Challenges

  • Wood surface is heterogeneous — grain, knots, moisture, rough saw texture → ink absorbs inconsistently → code density varies and legibility drops. Choose a technology that tolerates surface variation (CO₂ laser engraves; CIJ with large characters).

  • Sawing and machining throw wood dust and debris → dust fouls printheads and optics → drifting print quality and more downtime. Enhanced protection (IP rating) and maintenance planning are required.

  • Export wood packaging requires IPPC/EPAL permanent marks → a variable date-ink stamp is not a permanent identification mark → the shipment fails export compliance. Use permanent marking (laser or hot branding) for IPPC/EPAL.

  • Marked wood is stored and shipped outdoors → weather abrades or washes a surface mark → the identification is lost in the field. Use durable, outdoor-capable marking (hot branding or laser engraving).

Technology Selection
TechnologyFitWhy / Why Not
Label Print & Apply (LPA)★ Recommended(Pallets)The dominant standard for pallet identification — GS1/SSCC labels with WMS/ERP integration
Continuous Inkjet (CIJ)★ Recommended(Direct Marking on Panels / Wood Materials)Standard for direct marking on plywood, boards, timber, and construction wood
CO₂ Laser★ Recommended(Permanent Panel Marking)10.6 μm laser cleanly engraves organic material with strong contrast; consumable-free
Hot Branding / Stamp Impression○ Alternative(Durable Outdoor Applications)Mechanical/heat impression for durable, outdoor-capable marks on timber and traditional pallets
UV Laser- Not recommended(Wood Materials)The 355 nm cold-laser wavelength has no advantage on wood; CO₂ at 10.6 μm is the laser that cleanly engraves organic material

Pallet identification → automated label print & apply, tied to GS1/SSCC and WMS/ERP. Direct marking on plywood, boards, timber → CIJ (large characters hold better); permanent board marks → CO₂ laser, which cleanly engraves organic material. Outdoor durability → hot branding. Do not use UV laser on wood — wrong wavelength, no advantage; CO₂ is the laser that engraves wood cleanly.

LT800

· Max. 206 m/min @5×5

· IP55

· 1–5 lines

Why this one:

LT800's IP55 body keeps coding plywood and timber directly at up to 206 m/min @5×5 through the dust of a sawmill — where an unprotected head fouls and drifts.

FAQ

1
What's standard for pallet identification?
Automated label print & apply is the dominant standard, supporting GS1, SSCC, and WMS/ERP integration in logistics and warehouse environments
2
How is direct wood marking done?
CIJ is standard for plywood, boards, and timber; CO₂ laser is viable for permanent marks; hot branding is used where durable outdoor-capable marking is required.
3
What marks do export pallets need?
Export pallets and wood packaging may require IPPC/EPAL permanent identification marks — these are permanent requirements, not variable date codes.
4
How do you keep print quality in a dusty sawmill?
Use an IP-rated CIJ (e.g., IP55) and plan maintenance around wood dust, which otherwise fouls printheads and drifts quality.
